Using .NET with SQL 2005 - 3-in-1 (SQLCLR, ADO.NET, Web Services)
by Chad Boyd
You’ve probably heard about the integration of the Common
Language Runtime (CLR) into SQL Server 2005, maybe you know about native HTTP
endpoints and web services with Sql 2005, and you probably have begun using
ADO.NET 2.0. Have you started leveraging many of the new features in each to
solve old problems a new way (using features like Query Notifications and Cache
Synchronization, multiple methods for Asynchronous database operations, and
MARS)? Are you sure you understand when to use them and when not to?
Come and see how your application can benefit from the new feature set and get
guidance on when to use the CLR integration, when not to, and how to best
leverage the power of the CLR running inside SQL Server; see how you can use
ADO.NET 2.0 with Sql 2005 to do old things in new ways; and, get a peak at the
new native HTTP support with Sql 2005.
Chad is an Advisory Support Engineer / Premier Engineer for Sql
Server and Clustered systems with Microsoft Corporation responsible for
providing onsite and remote support, guidance, and advice with SQL Server
products to some of Microsoft’s foremost enterprise customers running the
largest, most complex SQL Server installations and configurations in the world.
This includes all SQL Server products and versions, including SQL Server 7.0,
2000, and 2005, the SQL Server database engine, Reporting Services, SSIS/DTS,
Notification Services, and Analysis Services on both 32 and 64 bit systems.
Chad's primary responsibilities include troubleshooting critical server
situations, performance tuning and monitoring, disaster recovery planning and
execution, architectural guidance for new Sql Server related deployments, and
delivering deep technical workshops/presentations/proof-of-concept sessions
covering a variety of technologies and functionality. Chad regularly
posts Sql Server related content, tools, and advice on his MSDN blog at
http://blogs.msdn.com/chadboyd, and presents/attends regularly at local DC user
groups and events, particularly the Northern Virginia Sql Server user group
(http://www.novasql.com). Chad can be contacted via his blog or email at chad.boyd@microsoft.com.
